7.1 Solving Systems of Equations by Graphing

Here is another teaching video for 7.1

Monday, December 3, 2012

7.1 Solving a System of Equations by Graphing

To solve a system of equation by graphing:
-Graph both equation on the same coordinate plane.
             -  If the equations are not in y=mx+b form then they need to be put in that form
-The point where they intersect is the solution.
-Remember you have the option of checking your answers by substituting (x,y) back in.

5.6 Intro to Parallel and Perpendicular Lines

Parallel Lines:  SAME SLOPE,  different y intercepts
Perpendicular Lines:  SLOPES ARE OPPOSITE RECIPROCALS, any y intercepts

Opposite reciprocal -  change the sign and flip the number

5.5 Standard Form To Slope-Intercept Form.mov

To put an equation into slope intercept form:
Keep in mind your goal is to isolate the variable y.
1.  move your x term over by adding or subtracting it
2.  divide to isolate the variable y

5.4 Practice with graphing in slope intercept form

Here is a great practice site for graphing in slope intercept form.

5.4 How to Write Linear Equations Given Two Points eHow com

to write an equation when given 2 points:

Step #1  Find the slope by using the formula   y2 - y1 /  x2 - x1
Step #2   Find your y int by plugging in a point and your slope to y = mx + b.  then solve that equation for b.

Compound Inequalities - Special Cases

Here is a quick reteaching video that may clear up some questions on the SPECIAL CASE problems such as NO SOLUTION  and ALL REAL NUMBERS.

Remember that it is possible that OR compound inequalities or GREATOR absolute value inequalities may produce a solution of ALL REAL NUMBERS.

Remember that it is possible that AND compound inequalities of Less ThAND absolute value inequalities may produce a solution of NO SOLUTION.

UNIT #4 TEST --- OVER CHAPTER 6

There will be a test over Unit #4 which covers material from Chapter 6 in our text.   The main topic covered is inequalities with one section on absolute value inequalities.  A great way to review would be to complete the Chapter 6 Pre Test which can be found at this link:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BzJ2Jy-k3iPON3lwd0JNd0V2Q1k

6.3 Solving and Graphing Compound Inequalities

TIPS for working with compound inequalities:
-Solve the two inequalities that make up the compound inequality seperately, then graph their two solutions together.

-The AND type grpah will look like a dumbbell
-The OR type graph will look like OARS on a boat

6.2 Solving MultiStep Inequalities

Whenever you solve inequalities be on the lookout for this rule:
When you multiply or divide BOTH sides of an inequality by a negative number you must flip the inequality symbol.

ALSO KEEP IN MIND THAT INEQUALITIES ARE SOLVED JUST LIKE EQUATIONS.  YOU HAVE THE SAME GOAL OF ISOLATING THE VARIABLE.

Chapter 6 Section 1 Solving 1 step Inequalities

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

You solve an inequality just like you solve an equation.

When graphing with a < or > sign you will always have an open circle because that point is not a solution.  An inequality sign that contains an = will always have a closed circle.

If your variable is on the left side of your inequality symbol then you can simply shade the direction the arrow points.
