Pre TEST UNIT #4 Ch. 6 Inequalities

There will be a test over Unit #4 ,which covers material from Chapter 6 in our text, on Friday November 1st. The main topic covered is inequalities with one section on absolute value inequalities/equations. A great way to review would be to complete the Chapter 6 Pre Test which can be found at this link:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BzJ2Jy-k3iPON3lwd0JNd0V2Q1k

Mr Simpson and Mr Spilker will also be available for extra help before or after school if needed to prepare. The only exception to this is Wednesday morning because of teacher meetings.

6.5 Absolute Value Inequalities

Great video that reteaches lesson 6.5

REMEMBER: greatOR and less thAND

Here are some additional notes that also may be helpful: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BzJ2Jy-k3iPONEgtTmljWHJ4S00

IXL.com practice for this section is L.3 and L.4 under Algebra 1 tab.

6.5 Solving Absolute Value Equations

IXL.com has practice available on this topic.  See L.1 under the Algebra 1 tab on that site.

Key teaching point:  Remember to set up two equations to find your TWO solutions to an absolute value equation.  The first equation is the same just without the bars (absolute value symbol).   The second equation is the same as the first except the number that is isolated is changed to a negative.

6.3 Compound Inequalities

IXL.com has some great practice over this section. Check out K.12, K.14, and K.15 under the Algebra section. Students get 20 free questions per day. If they would like more than 20 questions then they can see Mr. Spilker or Mr. Simpson for a FREE account.

TIPS for working with compound inequalities:
-Solve the two inequalities that make up the compound inequality seperately, then graph their two solutions together.

-The AND type grpah will look like a DUMBBELL
-The OR type graph will look like OARS on a boat

Here is a link to an additional video if you would like examples similar to the HW questions:

6.2 Solving Multi Step Inequalities

IXL.COM has great practice for this section.  See K.7 and K.8 in the Algebra section on their site.

KEY TEACHING POINTS FOR TODAY:

Whenever you solve inequalities be on the lookout for this rule:
When you multiply or divide BOTH sides of an inequality by a negative number you must flip the inequality symbol.

ALSO KEEP IN MIND THAT INEQUALITIES ARE SOLVED JUST LIKE EQUATIONS. YOU HAVE THE SAME GOAL OF ISOLATING THE VARIABLE.

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

6.1 Solving and graphing one step inequalities

If you go to IXL.com under the Algebra section there is some great practice available.  Try sections K.1   K.2   K.3  K.4     Sections 1, 2, and 4 need ADOBE FLASH player so they are best done on a laptop or desktop computer.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS for 6.1  :

You solve an inequality just like you solve an equation.

When graphing with a < or > sign you will always have an open circle because that point is not a solution. An inequality sign that contains an = will always have a closed circle.

If your variable is on the left side of your inequality symbol then you can simply shade the direction the arrow points.
